The explosion of electronic dance music has since become a multi-million pound global industry, but for the hundreds of people in Blackburn during this time period it was much more than that; an escape route from the crippling effects Thatcherism was having on their livelihoods and communities. BEAT MAKERS, a 90 minute independent documentary, charts the never ending hustle of up and coming as well as seasoned producers. Filmed inside their in-home studios, these hungry musicians aspire to obtain more equipment, sell their hot tracks, and, of course, make a name for themselves in the competitive music industry.

The movie follows a plethora of track masters in various stages of their careers including newcomer Justin “J Dot” Moyd, a 23 year college student who nears graduation, as he assembles his production center, works with aspiring recording artists and puts together his first professional demo package. We also see a group of savvy producers combine their collective efforts called ‘Battery Five’ discuss their trials and tribulations and their relentless pursuit to create a “movement” and be recognized in such a tumultuous business.

The film provides a behind the scenes forum for composers to get a lot off their chests and discuss their unbridled passion for making music all with a steadfast belief that the ‘next’ track will be the one to take them to the ‘next’ level!

When working with a soundchip such as the SID or the 2A03, the artist faces a number of technical constraints that limit, guide and inspire the creative process. The seminar will highlight and briefly explain some of these constraints, with particular emphasis on how they influenced artists during the golden age of chip music to give rise to some of the clichés that now define the genre. We will also see (and hear) how variations of the same constraints have emerged in other genres and ages, and how composers such as Bach have tackled them in similar or different ways.

Serious Feather’s Dokumentaion Iceland: Beyond Sigur Rós gibt in seinen 30 Minuten einen kleinen Ausblick über die Indepenent Musik Szene in Island. Dabei stehen unbekanntere Künstler als Mum oder Sigur Rós im Vordergrund, kurze Ausschnitte ihrer Musikvideos zeigen eine teilweise ganz andere Sicht als die unsere, wenn wir von Musik aus Island sprechen

Interessant ist das Interviews mit Ólafur Arnalds, wo er Bezug auf sein geleaktes Album nimmt oder die Ideen hinter der Platform Gogoyoko.

Allein schon wegen den Bildern der Landschaft sehenswert.

Der Tod der Schallplatte…

..kam 1977 mit der Leerkassette daher. Die gibt es mittlerweile nicht mehr, aber Schallplatten erfreuen sich immernoch großer Beliebtheit.

Ist schon interessant wenn man sich den Text durchliest und auf die gleichen Argumente stößt, die heute immernoch genutzt werden.
Wann wird die Musikindustrie wohl verstehen, dass kopierte Musik nie in Geld umgerechnet werden kann. Niemand der sich (zusätzlich zum legalen Musikerwerb) Musik anderweitig besorgt, würde diese auch kaufen (können).

Am Mittwoch, den 03.02.2010 konnte ich am Rande des Club Transmediale.10 Festivals der DVD Release Preview von Making Contakt – The Documentary in Berlin beiwohnen. Die Dokumentaion über die Contakt Tour des Minus Labels, welches anläßlich dessen 10. Geburtstages stattfand, zog allerhand Leute ins eher beschauliche Babylon Kino. Neben Richie Hawtin, welcher zum Abschluss einige Fragen aus dem Publikum beantwortete, war das ein oder andere bekannte Gesicht zu erkennen.

Contakt ist ein ergeiziges Projekt aus Technik, Improvison und Organisation. Live Acts spielen im Verbund mit DJ’s gekoppelt an einen Master Mixer – allein schon die Animation zur Erklärung des Zusammenwirkens der einzelnen Soundströme ist beeindruckend. Das erdachte Zusammenspiel der Künstler des Labels wie Magda, Troy Pierce, Heartthrob und Co. ist in einigen der ingesamt neun Auftritte für alle sehr frustrierend.

Im Wechsel zwischen Hysterie und Enttäuschung wie in Gentt gibt die Dokumentation einen schönen Überblick über die Besonderheiten jeder einzelnen Contakt-Show. Die beeindruckenden Animationen der Visual Künstler sowie die musikalische Untermalung runden den posivtiven Eindruck der gezeigten 78 Minuten ab.

Making Contakt – The Documentary wird am 26. Februar 2010 veröffentlicht. Wer des Englischen nicht mächtig ist hat die Auswahl zwischen deutschen, italienischen, spanischen und französischen Untertiteln.

Beim XLR8R Podcats 41: Minus 10-Year Anniversary gibts ein paar musikalische Eindrücke des Labels zu hören.
